Apparently, it takes what Bryn Mawr has, as the Minneapolis neighborhood was named one of the best in the country according to a national magazine’s ratings of the best cottage neighbourhoods in the United States.

“When I first saw it, it kind of felt like home to me,” said Bryn Mawr resident Chris Davis.

Bryn Mawr has plenty of character, great homes and gardens, and its residents want to keep it that way.

“When I think of cottages I think of neighbors knowing each other, interacting in each others’ lives,” said Davis, who grew up in Lookout Mountain, Ga., but moved to Bryn Mawr because it has that same folksy feel.

The people here are proud of their community. You’ll find its name nearly everywhere, even with a flowery flourish.

“At one point I realized I was surrounded on all four sides by people who were in their second homes in Bryn Mawr, so I knew something was up,” said Marlin Possehl, the president of the Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association.

Possehl listed some of the criteria required to make the “best cottage” list: “a lot of houses you can see people put care into, gardening, landscaping, maintaining, remodeling, interior, exterior…”

Cottage Living Magazine’s list also includes diversity, parks and playgrounds, and, “colorful, independent retail stores and eateries within walking distance.”

On all accounts, Bryn Mawr fills the bill.

“It’s just a fabulous neighborhood for people to be living in,” Possehl concluded.

“I like to support local things so I use the Mobile station in the neighborhood, a great little market over here,” said resident Elaine MacIntosh. “But it’s just a little gem of a community, because every single house is different. It’s not like living the suburbs where it’s cookie cutter homes.”

Some of the other top ten cottage neighborhood sites include Middleton Hills in Madison, Wis., and Rockhill Ridge in Kansas City, Mo.
